Biblical Ways That God Leads Believers

In Deuteronomy chapter 32 verses 10-12, God gives a distinct parallel between the way He led Jacob through the desert and the way a mother eagle cares for her young and teaches them to fly. “He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about and instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them up on her wings: so the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.” The process of learning to fly is very slow for the young eaglet. When it is old enough it begins hopping back and forth between the edges of the nest. As it exercises it’s wings and stretches them, it begins hop and flap. Soon the hopping turns to jumping, and the eaglet jumps higher and higher, sometimes to even fifteen feet above the nest! This slow process prepares the eaglet to learn to fly one day. God created the eagle to soar high in the heavens; God created us to glorify Him and soar high in this Christian life. In the last part of the verses above in Deuteronomy, it mentions that the mother “beareth” her young on her wings. When the eaglet takes its first flight, the mother flies along beside it, and her wings create a current, or “billow” of air that the eaglet can ride upon. Just like this mother eagle, our Heavenly Father flies at our side and lifts us up, never leaving or forsaking us. Aren’t you thankful in this life that God stays beside us and leads us faithfully? Below are six Biblical ways that God leads believers.

  1. Isaiah 48:17 “Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadest thee by the way that thou shouldest go.” God leads us in the way that we should go. He knows what we need and where we need to go better then we do. We may resist, or not like it or understand, but God can work everything for good if we let Him.

  2. Psalm 23:3 “He restoreth my soul, He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” God will lead us in righteouness. If you feel led a certain way, and it is not in rightouesness, it is not God leading you. God leads men; Satan pushes them.

  3. Deuteronomy 8:2 “And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no.” God leads us to humble us, prove us and test us. This verse also says that God leads certain ways to know what’s in our hearts, because it is not enough just to talk righteously. What’s in our hearts will show though in our lives; we can never win the world to Christ if we live in hyopcrisy and phoniness. He will lead us to develop His will for our lives.

  4. Lamantatians 3:1-7 says ” I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. Surely against me is he turned; he turned his hand against me all the day. My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones. He hath builded against me, and compassed me about with gall and travail. He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old. He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.” Sometimes God leads us into darkness. Not sin, but a darkness. There are times when God says “I am going to lead you into a place that you won’t like. But it will be good for you. It will mold you, humble you and make you more Christ-like.” It is in times like these that you must trust and obey, just like the old song. “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

  5. Psalm 23:2-3 “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of rightousness for His name’s sake.” God will lead us to refreshment. he knows what we can take and how much we can handle. It is part of living on this sinful, old earth and being human; we get worn out and taxed spiritually. But God will be faithful to lead us to His refreshment.

  6. Psalm 139: 9-10 “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me and thy right hand shall hold me.” God can lead you wherever you are. You don’t have to get to someplace else to start. Whatever the situation, whatever mess you are in, God can lead you from there to where He wants you to be.

In the Scriptures we are given three sources that God uses to lead us. The first two are rather obvious: 1. The Holy Spirit. 2. The Word of God 3. In Proverbs 6:20-22 we find that God leads us though our parents. “My son keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: bind them continually upon thy heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest it shall talk with thee.”

The first two seem easy, but it can be hard for a young person to believe that God will lead them through their parents. If you trust the LORD and obey His Word and believe that your parents are tools in God’s hand, His ways will not disappoint you. Because His ways are always right!
