The Perfect Will of God

How does one know God’s will for their life? His perfect will? Many Christians would say that they are “waiting for His will” or “in His will”, but unfortunately many times we only want to hear what we want to hear and we try to bend Him to our desires. As Christians, our focus should be: “Am I in the center of God’s will?”

Man Praying

In order to know if you are in God’s perfect will for your life, there are some things that you will find helpful.

1.In order to know God’s will, you have to follow Him. Andrew and Simon straightway dropped what they were doing and followed him, as did James and John further down in verses 21-22: “And they immediately left the ship and their father and followed him.” But, following is not enough.

“And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishers. And He saith unto them, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets and followed Him —Matthew 4:18-20

2.You must commit yourself to God and His ways. Jesus had thousands of followers, but only twelve disciples. It’s easy once you’ve started pushing that plow, to quit and give up. It’s not as easy as it seems to live righteously, or to stand alone. You must have that commitment ingrained upon your heart if you are to live the victorious Christian life and know God’s will.

“And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man saith unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And he saith unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go and bid them farewell which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.” —Luke 9: 57-62

3.You must truly seek after God. He will reward you. He may give you the desires of your heart, if they are His desires, but He will give you peace and understanding in His will. You must diligently seek Him if you want the rewards of an obedient life. So many Christians want to just jump in and out of God’s will when it is convenient and expect to be blessed. He doesn’t work that way. You must have the commitment and be diligent.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.”—Hebrews 11:6

4.Be a living sacrifice. Everyday, wake up determined to serve God and be a sacrifice for Him. Be void of any personal agenda and shake off the superficial. If you seek His will with a “servant’s mindset”, it will be made clear to you.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” —Romans 12:1-2

5.Rest and wait for what the LORD has for you. Once you have committed yourself to Him, truly sought after Him, and sacrificed your life to His will, you can rest and wait on Him, knowing that His perfect will, is perfect for you. As His word says, you can be “anxious for nothing.” The life of living in His perfect will is truly the life worth living! Don’t you feel a real joy when you know for sure, your in God’s will?

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” —Isaiah 40: 28-31

  1. God put a very strong passion in me many years ago for missions. I thought that He wanted me to be in the foreign mission field and I lived many years frustrated that that never came about, yet my passion intensified over the years and He graciously has provided short term opportunities. Yet I have to admit that I questioned if I was doing God’s will if my heart’s desires were so strong in another area. Finally I started to ‘getting it’ that He does indeed have me in a mission field. I just needed to see myself in His will right were I was. Once I stopped looking at what I wanted and started sincerely asking Him where He wanted me, I began to hear Him. I am to serve Him right where I am with a genuine interest in loving others and submitting myself to His promptings. This is the only time I can say that I have had peace about being in His will…when I was content and looking to Him to see my present situation as my mission field. Thank you for your post about God’s will.

  2. this was such a good read for me today…

I think often as a housewife I can wonder, “what’s really God’s will for me?” Does changing diapers, and fixing dinner really bring glory to Him?

Yet, I think I often view His will as some dark abyss somewhere far in the distance.. something I’m working towards, but can’t quite, and might not ever attain.

But I loved point #4… what the Lord’s been showing me lately is that His will really entails the “small” choices of everyday life. So whether it is changing diapers, or making dinner – if it’s in obedience to God – it’s His will for my life. That day. That moment.

It’s not sitting back waiting for God’s will to “hit” us.. it’s being proactive and living His will NOW!

obedience to Him is always His will for us! :)

    good blog. thanks for sharing.

  3. I have been hearing some of this from other people and
its starting to sink in. I think that i’m realizing that i can’t serve God in the big things until i can do the small things.. thanks pastor for reminding me.
